Section of Pediatric Neurocritical Care

Division of Pediatric & Developmental Neurology

Our section strives for excellence in patient care, research and education. Our clinical program at St. Louis Children’s Hospital is comprised of a multidisciplinary team who care for direct and indirect brain injuries along the entire longitudinal care continuum from initial presentation to rehabilitation and return home.

Patient care

Visit our program at St. Louis Children’s Hospital

Our Neurocritical Care Follow-up Program ensures patients and their families can transition from the overwhelming challenges of the intensive care unit back to school and their communities.

Education

Fellowship

Pediatric Neurocritical Care

The goal of our fellowship program is to equip the next generation of pediatric neurologists, intensivists and neurosurgeons to be leaders in the field of pediatric neurocritical care. We emphasize training across a spectrum of critical illness, include direct and indirect brain injury, and along the entire longitudinal care continuum. We aim to provide a rich and rigorous academic environment that is individualized to a fellow’s career goals.

Conference

Pediatric Neurocritical Care Symposium

An annual conference bringing together the multidisciplinary pediatric neurocritical care community for a day of talks that crosses the spectrum of neurocritical care from the field, prior to admission to rehabilitation and follow-up.

Research

Our research endeavors have formed strong collaborations across Washington University and include pediatric stroke, neuroimaging, cardiac arrest, traumatic brain injury, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG).

Labs

Cerebral Oxygen Metabolism in Children (COMIC) Brain Imaging Research Lab

Kristin Guilliams, MD MSCI

The COMIC lab uses non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to understand how blood flow and oxygen use changes as the brain is growing and developing throughout the first several decades of life.

Research profile

Dang Lab

Mai Dang, MD, PhD

The primary research goal of my laboratory is to uncover novel ways to alter the pediatric brain tumor microenvironment to enhance the efficacy of existing treatments and make treatments safer for children.
